Hole 9 at The Mines Golf

Overview

Hole 9 is a graceful Par 4 that brings the front nine to a crescendo. Sculpted into the side of a lush hillside, this hole offers both strategy and spectacle. With the elegant clubhouse forming a dramatic backdrop, this closing hole of the outward nine demands a composed tee shot and a confident approach. The undulating fairway and sloped green create a finale that rewards control more than aggression.

The Tee Shot

Standing on the elevated tee, golfers are presented with a generous landing zone that narrows subtly at the 200-metre mark. The fairway leans right-to-left with dense forest hugging the left flank and a quarry-like drop-off lining the right.

The smart line is to aim up the right side. From there, the ball will naturally filter left and centre. Miss right, however, and you'll face a side-hill lie or worse, a blocked approach from below the terrace line.

📝 Pro Tip: Shape a soft fade off the tee to hold the right side. Longer hitters can flirt with the crest, but the real advantage is positioning, not distance.

The Approach

Approaching from the right side gives you the most direct and open angle into the green, which is perched and guarded by a trio of bunkers: two fronting the green and one tucked back-left.

The green sits slightly above the fairway, making depth judgement tricky, especially from a downhill lie. A short wedge may seem simple, but the narrow green width punishes any misalignment.

📝 Pro Tip: Take an extra second to dial in your yardage. Approaches that fly pin-high and land softly are the ones that score here.

The Green

Measuring 16 metres wide and 26 metres deep, the green is deceptively subtle in slope. Back pin placements flirt with the ridge line, while front pins are protected by the bunker apron.

This green can be fast, especially when the sun is high. Slight misreads can turn a makeable birdie into a defensive two-putt.

📝 Pro Tip: Read this green from below. Subtle breaks are easier to see walking uphill toward the hole than from above it.

Visual Landmarks

Few finishing holes on the front nine rival this for natural theatre. The clubhouse looms in the distance with its emerald roofline and wraparound verandas. The fairway is framed on both sides by mature trees, casting long shadows in the late morning sun.

To the right, residential rooftops peep above the hill line, while the bunkering up ahead draws the eye directly to the green.

Summary

Hole 9 at The Mines Golf is a classic closer; a test of placement, distance control, and visual trust. It doesn’t call for brute force but rather rewards players who understand angles and play to their strengths. Birdies here are earned, not gifted, and the views walking up to the green are as rewarding as the score itself. A beautiful way to end the front nine, and to set the tone for the back.
