Hole 5 at The Mines Golf

Overview

Hole 5 at The Mines Resort & Golf Club is a deceptively challenging Par 3 that spans 177 metres from the back tee. While it may appear straightforward at first glance, this hole requires finesse, good judgement, and a solid strike to avoid the surrounding hazards. With water directly in front and mature trees guarding the flanks, it’s a classic example of how beauty and danger often go hand in hand in golf.

The Tee Shot

From the tee, players face a forced carry across a narrow lake inlet, requiring a clean strike and appropriate club selection. The green sits slightly elevated beyond the water, framed by trees that subtly influence wind patterns and demand attention to shot shape.

Club selection here is key—not only for the distance but also to account for swirling wind and the firm landing surface. Too little club and you're wet. Too much and you risk a difficult up-and-down from the back.

📝 Pro Tip: Always account for the wind and elevation. A confident swing with a slightly longer club is often safer than trying to force a short one.

The Approach

This is a single-shot hole, but for those who miss the green, recovery shots can be surprisingly varied depending on where the miss occurs:

  • Left or right misses are generous, offering mown collection areas and light rough for straightforward chips.

  • Short means water.

  • Long leaves a delicate downhill chip or putt, often with little spin to work with.

📝 Pro Tip: Miss left if you must. The slope helps feed the ball toward the centre of the green for a manageable second shot.

The Green

Measuring 28 metres wide and 19 metres deep, the green is slightly sloped from back to front with subtle undulations that can fool even seasoned players.

  • Front pins are most accessible, especially with a high-spin shot.

  • Back-right locations bring the rear bunker into play and are harder to hold.

📝 Pro Tip: Take time to walk your putting line—this green’s breaks are more subtle than they look from the tee.

Visual Landmarks

Framed by The Mines' urban skyline and tranquil lake below, Hole 5 offers a panoramic view of serenity and structure. The stone-lined lakefront, nearby palm groves, and the distinctive Mines corporate buildings make this one of the most visually iconic holes on the front nine.

A charming bridge to the left of the green, blooming with seasonal bougainvillaea, adds to the character of this photogenic short hole.

Summary

Hole 5 is a thoughtful Par 3 that demands a well-struck tee shot and confident club choice. The water adds visual pressure, but ample room around the green rewards calm execution. Whether you walk away with par or birdie, it’s a hole you’ll remember for its elegance, balance, and quiet tension.
