The Mines Golf Hole 1 layout

Overview

Hole 1 at The Mines Resort & Golf Club is a captivating start to your golfing journey. This Par 4 (361m) opener presents a stunning view from the tee box, with the Kuala Lumpur skyline framing the horizon and the shimmering lake stretching along the left. Its layout is both inviting and challenging, offering a generous fairway but demanding strategic precision to avoid trouble.

The Tee Shot

Standing on the elevated tee box, the fairway rolls out before you, beautifully manicured and bordered by lush palms and water on the left. The skyline in the distance adds a dramatic backdrop to your opening drive.

The generous landing area tempts long hitters, but a breeze from the left to right can alter your shot, sending it towards the pot bunkers on the right.

  • For the average hitter, the left side of the fairway is safe, but flirting too closely with the water brings risk.

  • Long hitters must be wary of the deep pot bunkers on the right; well-placed traps that have claimed many a stray ball.

📝 Pro Tip: Aim for the left-centre of the fairway to avoid the pot bunkers and set up a clean shot to the green.

The Approach

With a well-placed drive, you’re left with a short to medium iron shot into a split-level green. As you advance down the fairway, the view opens up, revealing a well-protected green with bunkers on the right and a natural slope on the left.

  • The right-side bunkers are strategically positioned to catch approach shots that stray from the centre line.

  • The green is split-level, demanding precision in club selection. If the pin is tucked in the back, it requires a lofted shot to hold it on the upper shelf.

📝 Pro Tip: If the pin is located at the back, play for the middle of the green. The slope will help funnel your ball towards the flag.

The Green

The approach is only half the battle. The green complex is beautifully designed, with subtle undulations and a sweeping backdrop of the lake and skyline. It measures approximately 22 metres wide and 28 metres deep, offering a fair yet challenging putting surface.

  • Speed and Breaks: The green rolls true, but be mindful of the subtle breaks, especially on the back tier.

  • Strategic Miss: If you’re going to miss, the left side leaves a more manageable chip back up the slope.

📝 Pro Tip: Walk around your putting line and observe the lake; putts tend to break slightly towards the water.

Visual Landmarks

The first hole is as much a visual delight as it is a golfing challenge. From the tee, you are treated to views of Palace of the Golden Horses, the shimmering lake, and the lush fairways lined with towering palms. As you approach the green, the expanse of the lake becomes more prominent, creating a serene yet imposing atmosphere.

Summary

Hole 1 at The Mines Golf Course is a picturesque yet strategic opener that sets the tone for the rest of your round. Its downhill tee shot, generous landing area, and split-level green create opportunities for birdies; but only if you play it smart. A perfect blend of beauty and challenge, it’s a fitting introduction to the elegance and difficulty of The Mines Resort & Golf Club.
